Meet Don Lam

During high school, I often felt unseen in many social settings. On the outside, I would put on a front to try and impress others, but deep down, I struggled with my confidence.

Growing up, I was always impressed by guys who were strong and built. And after seeing my cousin’s incredible transformation after a year of consistent lifting, I was inspired to give it a try.

In my first year of university, I made the commitment to start training regularly, with hopes of transforming my physique to become bigger, stronger, and to gain more confidence. Within a few weeks, I started noticing that my physique was changing. When I went home for the first time since graduating, everyone noticed the gains I had made. This was the first time in years I truly felt seen by those around me. This is when I realized that true confidence isn’t gained overnight, but built gradually through various life experiences.

It’s been 15 years since I began taking weight training seriously, and it’s the one area of my life where I’ve remained consistent. Since 2014, I’ve competed in nine bodybuilding shows in the Men’s Physique division, competed at the Natural Canada Pro Qualifier twice, and last year, I was battling for the Natural Canada IFBB Pro Card in the Men’s Physique Overall. My pursuit of becoming a Pro continues, and I’m not stopping until I achieve this goal.

Beyond the gym, I’m a father, husband, and business owner. Staying fit and healthy enables me to take care of loved ones, instead of being a burden due to my health.

In 2017, I took a leap of faith and closed the door on my 4-year career in HR to fully dedicate myself to DIYBODY full-time. My HR job, while stable, was becoming increasingly dull and unfulfilling. Training was the one thing that got me excited about the day and gave me a sense of purpose. I knew deep down what I wanted to do with my time; I just needed the courage to leave my job and go all in on my passion.

Launching DIYBODY was far more than a career change; I consider it my calling. It was my way of sharing my passion with the world and help those who were searching for confidence and a sense of purpose. Fitness coaching is a way that I could make an impact in people’s lives and help them unlock their full potential by guiding them through their own journey of self-improvement.

Coaching Philosophy

My goal is to instil my coaching methodologies into those that I work with, giving them the tools and knowledge they need to become self-sufficient and empowered. As the saying goes, ‘Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.’ It’s extremely rewarding when my clients are able to unlock their full potential through fitness and step into the next version of themselves.

Who I Work Best With:

I work best with individuals who are serious and ready to go all in. They know exactly what they want to achieve and have a clear vision of their goals. This is why I love working with competitors. They have an amazing level of focus and commitment. Competitors understand the importance of hard work, discipline, and commitment. Their focus and effort match perfectly with how I like to coach, making our collaboration both effective and rewarding.
